Cubs Recall Miles Mastrobuoni, Send Matt Mervis Down

The Chicago Cubs are coming off a gut-wrenching loss on Friday to the Milwaukee Brewers. After leading 1-0 entering the eighth, the Cubs allowed three runs in the frame to surrender the contest.

Before Saturday's matchup, the Cubs decided to strengthen their group. After posting a respectable .754 OPS  in Triple-A, Miles Mastrobuoni is returning to the show. In his place, Matt Mervis is venturing back to Triple-A Iowa.

Mastrobuoni hasn't put up incredible numbers with the Iowa Cubs over his 10-game stretch there, but had a banner game on Thursday. The utility man had a three-run home run, and a RBI double, accounting for all four of his Triple-A RBIs in 2024. Despite average offensive numbers, his positional versatility is a big plus for the Cubs right now.

As for Mervis, the first baseman posted an underwhelming .115/.148/.154 slash line in nine big-league games. Now, Mervis will look to regain his stroke, but could be running out of time to prove what he can do to the Cubs' brass.

The Cubs and Brewers run it back at 1:20 p.m. CDT on Saturday, May 4. Jameson Taillon is on the bump for the Cubs and Tobias Myers is on the hill for the Brewers. Mastrobuoni is not in the lineup on Saturday, but is available off the bench.
