Max Verstappen claims he was extremely surprised by the ‘INSANE’ pace of Lando Norris during the Miami GP
Peter Casey-USA TODAY Sports

The 2024 Miami GP is done and dusted but the hype around it is still very much intact. McLaren’s Lando Norris pulled off a shock victory over Max Verstappen and the latter has recently admitted that he is quite surprised by it.

During the 57-lap Miami GP, Lando Norris was putting in stellar laps that were in a league of their own. The MCL38 was working really well in the hands of the Brit and this was one of the main reasons why Max Verstappen was not able to get the better of him in the latter stages.

Norris won the Miami GP by a margin of 7.612s over second-place Verstappen.

Well, I mean, I didn't really see him in the beginning because I was more focused on Oscar behind and the Ferraris. But then I boxed and I heard the pace that he was doing on the used Mediums. I was like, ‘I mean, that's quite insane’. I mean, I would have never been able to do so. Max Verstappen said in an interview with racingnews365

Norris was nowhere in the running for a Grand Prix win in Miami but a late safety car changed the whole complexion of the event. Moreover, when he found himself leading the race, there was no looking back for the McLaren driver and he was able to maintain his cool while being chased down by the prolific Verstappen.

Max Verstappen feels the RB20 was just not ‘quick enough’ in Miami

While Max Verstappen has acknowledged the might of Lando Norris around the Miami street circuit, he has also taken the time to openly admit that his RB20 was just not quick enough during the 57-lap event. He feels that the laps after the safety car were the ones, where he really lost out against Norris.

The 26-year-old was carrying damage to the floor of his RB20 during the Miami GP.

Sometimes it works for you, sometimes it works against you. And even with that Safety Car, we still had all the opportunities to win today, but we're clearly not quick enough after that Safety Car. Max Verstappen said in the same interview

With the Miami event out of the way, the 2024 F1 season is now six rounds down and the sport will now head to Italy for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. The free-flowing characteristics of the Enzo e Dino Ferrari track are bound to favor the RB20 and considering this, normal service could resume during the event. Despite the recent shock, Max Verstappen is the early favorite to triumph in the 63-lap race!
